Dr Joseph Tinarwo’s research interests are around food systems, particularly the intersection of food security, nutrition, and climate change. Joseph holds a PhD in Public Management and Governance, specialising in food systems from the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. Over the years, Joseph has supported governments, development partners, and NGOs on food systems and development projects. Joseph’s research in this area is undertaken in collaboration with international researchers at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Queen Mary University of London, the World Agriculture Forum, the University of South Africa, and local academic institutions and think tanks in Zimbabwe.
Joseph currently works on a research project, which was initially funded through an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), UK, partnership development grant awarded in 2019, and has recently been extended to include a focus on the link between food systems and postcolonial infrastructure repair, as well as upon migrant remittances. The latter involves partnering with the MiFOOD Network to deliver an ambitious multi-country research programme that will provide insights into the role remittances may play in promoting food and nutrition security for vulnerable communities facing environmental change driven by the climate crisis.
